TTC BHM Campaigns

Since 2023, AstroSankofa has been working with the Toronto Transit Commission to celebrate Black Artist of the city and to raise awareness of the legacies and histories of Black trailblazers and changemakers of the past and present. Each year the campaign featured a different theme and a different set of artists from the AstroSankofa collective.

2025 - City of Belonging: Celebrating Toronto’s Black Community Builders

Many Black Torontonians have played a pivotal role in building our community and creating a sense of belonging, safety, and unity. They’ve been instrumental in shaping the city as a welcoming and inclusive space for all. The TTC celebrates their contributions and continues to help advance equity and inclusion for the benefit of our riders, employees, and fellow residents.

Black leaders have made significant contributions across politics, education, healthcare, immigrant support, social justice, and public safety - many of which are deeply connected to the TTC’s role as a public transit provider. Every year, we honour some of those who have made exceptional contributions to the city from this community. They were chosen in concert with TTC employees, along with Black community members and leaders

2023 - MOVING LEGACIES: Celebrating Black innovation and resistance in Toronto

TTC will be spotlighting the work of eight local Black artists across the system under the theme “Moving legacies: Celebrating Black innovation and resistance in Ontario. The art features key Black figures, who have played an important role in Ontario politics, education, infrastructure and industry over the years.

The artists were selected in partnership with Astrosankofa Arts Initiatives, and their work will be prominently displayed on wrapped buses, as murals on streetcars and buses, as posters in stations, and across TTC social media channels. For the first time, the TTC will also be wrapping a Wheel-Trans vehicle to recognize the month.
